Mainline filters play an essential role in water treatment, frequently used both for household purposes and as pre-filters in industrial settings.

Today, we’ll go over the types of cartridges available for these filters. Despite previous discussions, many clients still have questions.

Cartridge Housing Sizes

To choose the right cartridge, you must first know the size of the filter housing.

The three main housing sizes for mainline filter cartridges are:

Mechanical Water Filtration Cartridges

These cartridges are used to reduce water turbidity and remove larger particles that can damage household appliances and subsequent filter materials. There are four main types of mechanical filter cartridges:

  1. Thread-wound: Made by winding polypropylene thread onto a core, with porosity determined by the thickness and winding of the thread.
  2. Melt-blown polypropylene: Created without a core by spraying liquid polypropylene, with rigidity provided by the cartridge structure.
  3. Gradient cartridge: Has two layers of differing porosity (5 and 20 microns), allowing for two-step filtration.
  4. Bacteriostatic cartridge: Contains a chemical agent to prevent slime buildup, extending cartridge life.

For typical household mainline filters, 5-micron cartridges are most commonly used; in commercial systems, 5-micron filters are recommended, with 10 and 20-micron filters for pre-ultrafiltration.

Carbon Cartridges

Activated carbon is effective for removing chlorine and organic impurities, reducing water color and odors. In our catalog, we offer two main types of carbon filter elements:

  • Granulated carbon cartridge: Filled with activated carbon granules, it may release some carbon dust during filtration.
  • Carbon block: Made of compressed activated carbon powder, which avoids carbon dust and can trap particles larger than 10 microns.

Typically, 10-inch cartridges are used for drinking water, while BB10 and BB20 filters are ideal for whole-home applications.

Hydrogen Sulfide Removal Cartridge

Our catalog includes a cartridge with Centaur catalytic material, effectively removing hydrogen sulfide and reducing organics and hydrocarbons. This cartridge is ideal for well water with a characteristic rotten egg smell.

Iron Removal Cartridge

This cartridge contains a mix of catalytic material, activated carbon, and pH corrector, suitable for well water with up to 1 mg/l iron content.

Cartridge Features:

  • Size: 4.5''x20'' (BB20)
  • Capacity: 10,000 liters
  • Filtration rate: 5 L/min

For questions about water softening cartridges, we advise against ion-exchange cartridges for mainline filters due to their short lifespan and environmental impact.

For maintenance-free options, consider BWT backwash filters.
